Alternate Nostril Breathing: Mind-Body Connection

In Yogic philosophy, one of the main ways to feel the connection between mind and body is through breathing. Alternate nostril breathing is a powerful technique that can balance, calm, energise the mind. It improves concentration and creates a sense of peace and clarity.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Here is a basic alternate nostril breathing exercise:

  1. Sit upright in a comfortable position with your back straight. Place you left hand on your left knee.
  2. Bring your right hand to your face, with your index and middle finger placed on your forehead (over your third eye area).
  3. Use your thumb to close the right nostril and inhale slowly and consistently through your left nostril. Pause.
  4. Close your left nostril with your ring finger. Move your thumb to open your right nostril, and exhale slowly and consistently.
  5. Inhale through your right nostril, slowly and consistently. Pause.
  6. Close your right nostril, open your left, and exhale through your left nostril, slowly and consistently. Pause before moving onto the right nostril.
  7. Repeat this pattern for around 10 cycles. Then, release your right hand and rest it on your right knee. Return to normal breathing.

This exercise improves the connection between both sides of the brain. It reduces feelings of stress and anxiety, lowers heart rate and relieves tension, regulate the cooling and warming cycles of the body, and revitalises your mind.

Our left nostril activates the right side of our brain, and our right nostril activates the left hand side of our brain. To activate one side of your brain more often (if you are significantly dominant in either your left or right brain thinking), you can sleep on the appropriate side of your body to activate the corresponding side of your brain.

Here are two more types of alternate nostril breathing, as described by Dr Prakash C. Malshe in his book A Medical Understanding of Yoga.

Sahita Pranayama

  • Inhale through the left nostril, counting up to 16.
  • Hold the breath by closing both nostrils, counting up to 64.
  • In this time, make a sucking in effort that creates negative pressure inside the chest cavity (uddiyana bandha).
  • Then, release the breath through the right nostril, counting up to 32.
  • Repeat the process with the other nostril to complete the cycle.

This builds up the anaerobic capacity of holding your breath on inhale.

Suryabhedana Pranayama

  • Breathe in fully through the right nostril.
  • Then, hold your breath with a lot of effort while maintaining the chin lock (jalandhara bandha).
  • Hold your breath for as long as you possibly can.
  • When it is time to exhale, do so out of your left nostril, slowly, continuously, and with patience.
  • This should be repeated continuously.

This Pranayama is said to extend life and awakening the kundalini as well as increasing heat in the body. The conflict between the urge to breathe and voluntarily suppressing this urge raises our body temperature without the need for shivering.

It is possible to raise your body temperature enough to sweat using this method. It has been studied, and the results showed that participants started sweating after 4 cycles of this procedure (taking about 5 minutes to complete). Their body temperature rose by 2 °F in this time. Where this heat is generated from remains to be investigated because there is apparently no shivering or muscle contraction involved.

There are some advantages to this. Raising your body temperature intentionally can ward off the common cold. Inducing a higher body temperature also provides the correct temperature for immune cells to thrive.

There are also some adverse effects that can arise when we practice this type of breathing. In scientific research on suryabhedana pranayama some participants got cold sores. Herpes bacteria thrives in warmer temperatures. It was also noted that the palms of the hands of some participants grew red after practising this for a few days in a row, and the skin of their palms became dry.

Interestingly, there is no medical treatment available for excessive palm sweating, so in fact suryabhedana pranayama could be a reliable treatment method.

Panchakarma – What is Panchakarma?

Health = Order, Disease = Disorder

This is the basis on which Ayurveda is built. Within the body, there is a constant interaction between order and disorder. When the body becomes imbalanced and there is more disorder than order, a Panchakarma can be a highly effective process to bring balance and order back into your being.

Ayurvedic Doshas

Before you begin a Panchakarma, you will need to understand you body’s Dosha type. According to Ayurveda, every single person is a unique combination of universal consciousness, made from the five basic elements: Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Ether.

There are 3 main Dosha types:

  1. Vata – A combination of Air and Ether.
  2. Pitta – A combination of Fire and Water.
  3. Kapha – A combination of Water and Earth.

These three organisations of the body affect your body type (for example how easily you gain or lose weight) as well as your personality traits and the types of illnesses and ailments you are more likely to experience.

Every person has a different proportion of each Dosha. You might be totally Vata, Pitta, or Kapha predominant. Or, perhaps you are Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, or Kapha-Vata predominant. Rarely, someone will be Vata-Pitta-Kapha predominant.

This balance of Dosha type is unique to you, and is your own natural order. Your health is negatively impacted when the balance is disturbed. Sometimes this imbalance can be dramatic, and you may experience multiple minor or major health problems.

This is where Panchakarma comes in.

What is Panchakarma?

Ayurveda states that releasing toxins from the body is key to preventing disease. Panchakarma is an intense cleansing process that purifies your body from the inside out.

You can go to a Panchakarma retreat for up to 21 days, but some people do a lighter version of Panchakarma in their own home.

Panchakarma includes 5 different cleansing methods

5 Panchakarma Cleansing Methods

1. Vamana: Therapeutic Vomiting

Vamana is the process of therapeutic vomiting to eliminate the mucus build up as a result of excess Kapha. If someone is prone to colds, coughs, and asthma, it is a sign of excess Kapha. Therapeutic vomiting is also related to diabetes and chronic indigestion. Emotions that are stored in the stomach and lungs can be released in this process.
Once vamana is complete, you will feel instantly lighter, any wheezing or breathlessness will have disappeared, and you will have a clear mind and a clear sounding voice. Afterward, it is recommended that you rest, fast, and release bodily urges whenever you feel the need.

2. Virechan: Purgation

The second method of Panchakarma, virechan, is related to excess Pitta. Excess bile produced and accumulated in the liver and small intestines can lead to rashes, skin inflammation, acne, nausea, and jaundice. Virechan, or purgation, is the act of ingesting an Ayurvedic laxative. This is to restore the Pitta balance in your body. In fact, this process can totally cure the problem of excess Pitta.

3. Basti: Enema

The third cleansing process of Panchakarma is an enema. Vata is the force that is most active in diseases. Vata is stored in the large intestines and bone tissue. You reach the root cause of disease by controlling Vata through basti or enema.

4. Nasya: Eliminate of toxins through the nose

The nose is the doorway to the brain and to consciousness. Prana, life force energy, enters the body through breaths inhaled nasally. Prana is found in the brain and maintains sensory and motor functions, regulates mental activities, memory, concentration and intellectual activities.

Nasya is a nasal massage. Here is how to do it: each morning and evening, dip your little finger in ghee. Slowly begin massaging the inner walls of your nose in a clockwise motion, then counterclockwise, gradually working your way up. Do not be forcible in this process, but aim to eventually insert your finger as far as it will go.

Ensure that you keep your fingernails very short, so you don’t damage the delicate mucous membrane in the nose. In time, your breathing pattern will change, emotions will be released, and your eyesight may even improve as the days go on.

5. Rakta Moksha: Detoxify the blood

The intestinal tract absorbs nutrients into the body. The same goes for toxins in the intestinal tract. This leads to conditions like hypertension and other circulatory problems including rashes, acne, and chronic itching or hives. The final method of Panchakarma is to detoxify the blood system. Pitta and blood have a very close relationship: an excess of Pitta in the blood causes toxicity.

Traditionally carried out with leeches, releasing blood from the body by other means is also widely carried out today. Letting blood causes the spleen to produce anti-toxic substances boost immune system activity. Toxins in the blood are then neutralised, which results in dramatic improvements or cures from many blood disorders.

Purify your body at home

Panchakarma is an extreme form of purging and cleansing. It is a big commitment that commands a lot of respect for Ayurvedic traditions. Some people choose to create their own milder version of Panchakarma at home.

This article has shown you the basics of Ayurvedic Dosha types, and outlined the 5 core principles of Panchakarma.

Panchakarma is a process of great depth, and there are some treatments excluded from this article, such as Shirodhara – the act of pouring warm liquids on your forehead.

The truth is, it is not necessary to go these extreme lengths to cleanse your body. There are much more readily-available processes that require less effort but still produce maximum results.

Female Orgasm and Male Orgasm – What Happens In The Brain?

Although the male and female bodies are completely different, the brain has the same responses during an orgasm. One key difference however is that the female orgasm lasts longer, so it’s easier for scientists to keep track of brain imagery.

The energy of ORGASM was found to have the most impact on our ability to literally change our brain, thought processes, and hard wired habits.

This is called Neurogenesis.

During the peak of an orgasm, the brain releases huge amounts of dopamine and oxytocin, which has been compared to a shot of heroin!

Let’s talk about how these chemicals physically transform our brains and then we’ll discuss how to use this information to unleash our inner super powers!

Dopamine

Dopamine’s job is to manage motivation, power of will, interest, pleasure, attention, and concentration. It also plays a role in Neurogenesis (growing the brain by creating neurons).

By stimulating dopamine release, you are creating brain pathways that support your ability to focus and have reasons to do anything. This will be helpful in acting upon the goals you set for yourself.

An orgasm isn’t the only way to release dopamine, however during an orgasmic climax, huge amounts of it are released. When we learn to find these feelings without an orgasm, we can actually control the release of dopamine in our systems to have more of a “constant dose” being released at all times.

Oxytocin

This hormone is very important in the female reproductive systems: sexual activity, childbirth, and breast feeding. Oxytocin also creates the bond between parent and child.

Men produce oxytocin in the same way and the same quantity as women, however it interacts differently with testosterone. Oxytocin seems to balance out the “winning” energy of testosterone with “brotherhood” and attachment.

Oxytocin plays a major role in social bonding, generosity, compassion, and neurogenesis. By growing your brain, fuelled by oxytocin, your relationships will be well nurtured, increasing your quality of life through Win/Win deals in personal and business relationships.

In the same way as dopamine, when we learn to find these chemicals at will, we can have an ongoing dose of “brain changing substances” that feel really good and that can help you create the life that you want.

Reaching Orgasmic Euphoric States Using Only Your Breath

For thousands of years, Yogis have been using the power of breath to reach euphoric orgasmic states of bliss. Kundalini and Tantra are all about channeling our sexual life force energy towards the brain and the whole body to feel really good and reach higher levels of consciousness.

This is all totally separate from sex. Through breathing techniques and energy locks we can generate a massive current of energy in the body and gain access to euphoric heightened brain states of emotion and high energy, that mixed with a chosen idea or vision will become a “mold” for your brain, pointing everything in your being towards the thing that you want to manifest.

The Secret Ingredient 

To wake up sexual energy that resembles a female orgasm, or male orgasm, we have to use a component very well known in Yoga called the Mula Bandha. This refers to the perineum and pelvic floor muscles. The way to stimulate those is to use the muscles you’d use to hold in your urine.

If you really need to go to the toilet and your holding your pee, you’re cutting off the flow so you don’t wet yourself. Imagine drawing up those muscles for a “pulse” at the top of your inhale.

Steps:

  1. Breathe in and then contract the pelvic floor muscles for a “pulse”
  2. Fully relax and let go on the exhale
  3. Repeat

It’s like a pump. As you do this, imagine you are pumping this sexual energy around your body. This will start circulating the feel-good hormones, dopamine and oxytocin, around the body.

This is how we create states similar to the female orgasm at will, whenever we want..

How To Reprogram The Brain 

The more you do this exercise, the more you will develop the sensitivity in your body to feel the euphoric energy rise from your pelvic floor, all the way up the spine to the brain and then expand throughout your whole body.

Imagine feeling a 0.01% of the female orgasm or male orgasm as a “default” feeling, with you all the time.

At first it will be very subtle, however each squeeze can actually become very intense and you can get pretty good at making yourself feel really good whenever you want.

As you breathe like this, on each inhale and squeeze you will feel the energy in your body grow and grow. This will put your brain in total receptivity towards a new idea, a new plan or to the development of a new characteristic or quality you want to have.

You simply mix these wonderful feelings with an intention, and imagine it as though it’s already real. This is how manifestation works. By shaping neurons and neuronal pathways into something new, you can manifest the things you desire. This is something that you have complete control over.

Just think: you can become any type of person you want and attract or create the type of life that you dream of. It’s very doable and you can train yourself to manifest effortlessly.

In the early 1900s, one of the founders of O.T.O. accused a man named Aleister Crowley for revealing their most “important secret”…

Aleister Crowley

Crowley is a very notorious icon in history due to his sexually controversial life and numerous written publications on Ceremonies, Magic, Poetry, and Occultism.

He believed that he had found a “secret power” and started the movement of “Sex Magick”. He led many “ceremonies” based around sex and sexual practices since he believed sex to be the “supreme magical power”. Crowley wrote a book called The Book of the Law which, he claimed, was whispered to him by his own “guardian angel”.

Some describe it as an initiation to a “new way of life”

In his own autobiography, Aleister talks about how he became a rebel against conventional religion and how his conflicting views with authority led to him being cast as a “black magician” and that his aim was always “the progress and spiritual freedom of humanity”.

One of his most notorious works of literature was The Book of Lies. After publication, Crowley was approached by one of the founders of O.T.O Society. This man, Tantric occultist and Freemason, Theodor Reuss, accused him of publishing their biggest secret.

As Crowley describes in his autobiography:

“It instantly flashed upon me. The entire symbolism, not only of freemasonry but of many other traditions, blazed upon my spiritual vision. From that moment the O.T.O. assumed its proper importance in my mind. I understood that I held in my hands the key to the future progress of humanity.”

Once Theodor Reuss realized that Crowley simply didn’t know the magnitude of his publication, he invited him to join O.T.O., and over time, Crowley  became the most influential member of such secret society which grew around the idea of “Love is the law, love under will”.

Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, a British organization dedicated to the study and practice of metaphysics, paranormal activities and the occult became one of the largest influences in Western occultism. The three founders of the Golden Dawn were also Freemasons.

Aleister Crowley was part of this group and he played a role in the conflict which ultimately led to the end of the organization.

A man named Francis X King, a British occult writer and editor who wrote about witchcraft, sex magic, tantra, and holistic medicine was a member of the Society of the Inner Light, which can be traced back to the Golden Dawn.

In his book “The Rites of Modern Occult Magic”, published in 1970, he makes reference to an old Masonic periodical created by Reuss, where information was revealed about what the O.T.O. activities really were:

“Our order possesses the key which opens up all Masonic and Hermetic secrets, namely, the teachings of sexual magic, and this teaching explains, without exception, all the secrets of Freemasonry and all systems of religion“.

Did Jesus Christ Practice Sex Magic? 

Many historians and researchers have pointed out that Jesus may have had a sexual relationship with one of his followers, Mary Magdalene. This is strongly denied by churches and hardcore Christian believers, but the idea that Jesus was a man who acknowledged his sexual nature and had a lover might make more sense.

The original tales of these histories leave a lot of room for misinterpretation. Many have said that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute asking for forgiveness. Others have said that Mary actually came from a wealthy family and enjoyed a sexually liberated lifestyle.

One element on which everyone agrees is that Mary Magdalene was very close to Jesus – even sparking jealousy from other pupils – and that she was present at the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Christ. 

In the highly acclaimed book The Templar Revealed, the writers make a very strong case in their enormous research to prove a few points that could have been distorted, or put aside, by the Roman Catholic Church influencing the choice of texts within the New Testament.

One of such claims is that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a sexual relationship. Here’s an actual quotation from the book:
 
“Mary Magdalene had a ritualized, “sacred” sexual relationship with Jesus, in keeping with their religious beliefs, and as his initiator into the sacred mysteries had an equal relationship to Jesus.”

What Is Intermittent Hypoxic Training?

Intermittent hypoxic training was first developed in the 1930’s by the Soviet Union. It is a method to improve human performance by way of adaptation to reduced oxygen for brief periods of time.

Intermittent hypoxia produced by intermittent hypoxic training is defined as repeated episodes of hypoxia with intervening periods of normoxia (normal breathing). An IHT session consists of an interval of several minutes breathing hypoxic (low oxygen) air, alternated with intervals breathing ambient (normoxic) or hyperoxic air. This procedure is repeated over a 45- to 90-minute session per day, with a full treatment course taking three to four weeks.

Standard practice is for the patient to remain stationary while breathing hypoxic air via a hand-held mask. The therapy is delivered using a hypoxicator during the day time, allowing the dosage to be monitored. Biofeedback can be delivered using a pulse oximeter.

The actual durations used in different experimental studies vary widely, with hypoxia periods ranging from 3 to 90 min.

Intermittent Hypoxic Training Benefits

Intermittent hypoxic training has been used to try to improve performance in sports. Intermittent hypoxic training (IHT) protocols that administer different doses of intermittent hypoxia have been also been used in a number of health conditions.

In the 1970s Russian scientists trying to improve athletic performance of athletes produced numerous studies identifying the many benefits of intermittent hypoxic training.

Some of these health benefits include:

  • Increased stamina and endurance.
  • Lower blood pressure.
  • Formation of natural ‘heart bypasses’ called coronary collaterals.
  • Improved blood flow to muscles and tissues.
  • Increased efficiency of mitochondria leading to less risk of oxidative stress, degenerative disease and aging of cells.
  • Increased growth hormone levels.
  • Relief from asthma, arthritis, diabetes, sleep disorders and other chronic diseases.
  • Activation of stem cells leading to lower inflammation, cell repair, growth and even neurogenesis.

The benefits of intermittent hypoxic training are shown when blood saturation of oxygen drops below 90% for 1-3 minutes. Even very brief exposure to hypoxia for even just 15-30 seconds has been shown in studies to give some benefits.

Intermittent Hypoxic Training Methods

For the last 50 years scientists have been studying the effects of hypoxia and have tried various methods of inducing it. It is now a well recognised therapeutic healing modality called ‘Intermittent Hypoxic Therapy’

  • Hypobaric chambers
  • Quick ascent to high altitudes for short durations.

Nisshesha Rechaka Kumbhaka Pranayama

The ancient yogi’s must have instinctively realised the benefits of intermittent hypoxia as they developed a safe and natural method of intermittent hypoxic training that’s as simple as holding your breath…

Nisshesha Rechaka is a breathing technique from pranayama that involves holding your breath after expiring all the air from your lungs to produce a drop in blood oxygen levels. Intermittent hypoxia begins to happen at around 1-1:30min of holding your breath. An experienced practitioner can maintain a state of hypoxia for at least 2-3 mins that mimics the effects produced by hypoxic chambers and hypoxicators.

Dr P Malshe at the Antar Prakash Centre for Yoga, tested different varieties of Pranayama for their efficiency in producing hypoxia using a pulse oximeter.

They recorded the SpO2 during different breathholding techniques.

They discovered that a particular sequence ‘Bhastrika followed by Nisshesha rechaka’ is very efficient in producing hypoxia. This is simply ‘hyperventilation followed by breath holding in full expiration’.

The physiological explanation is as follows: The hyperventilation washes out carbon dioxide which at particular concentrations signals your brain to breathe. Once that is done, the breath can be held for a longer duration.

It is the pranayama technique that creates hypoxia the fastest and breath holding called Kumbhaka in pranayama is one of the most revered techniques for controlling energy in your body.

True yogis speak of the importance of slowing down your breath in order to experience optimum health and mental clarity.

When the breath is expired, it is Rechaka, the first kind of Pranayama. When the breath is drawn in, it is the second, termed Puraka. When it is suspended, it is the third kind, called Kumbhaka. Kumbhaka is retention of breath. Kumbhaka increases the period of life.’ Sri Swami Sivananda

Your unconscious mind cannot distinguish between positive and negative, so if you want to reach your perfect weight, you would say ‘I am at my perfect weight and body shape’ rather than ‘I don’t want to be fat’ otherwise your unconscious mind will act on the word fat, ignoring the don’t and manifest that result instead.

2. They must be in the present tense – as you manifest only what you truly believe has already occurred, all intensions should be in the present tense. For example if you want want attract more money, you would say ‘I am wealthy’ or you can be even more specific and say ‘I have $100k in my bank account”

Other points to consider are:

4. They must be in the first person
5. They must involved a specific action
6. Repetition is essential, so the more times you repeat an affirmation the better. It should become a daily practice.
7. Positive intentions do not magically manifest results, what they do instead is open your subconscious mind to new channels of information and opportunity, so you must take action on these in order for any major changes to happen to your life.

Here are some examples of good and bad positive intentions to use.

I am a creative thinker – good

I want to be a creative thinker – bad

I am in perfect health – good

I don’t want to be fat – bad

So remember to pick the right statements for your intentions, then make it a daily habit to clear the clutter and reprogram your subconscious/unconscious mind.
