Alternate Nostril Breathing: Mind-Body Connection

In Yogic philosophy, one of the main ways to feel the connection between mind and body is through breathing. Alternate nostril breathing is a powerful technique that can balance, calm, energise the mind. It improves concentration and creates a sense of peace and clarity.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Here is a basic alternate nostril breathing exercise:

  1. Sit upright in a comfortable position with your back straight. Place you left hand on your left knee.
  2. Bring your right hand to your face, with your index and middle finger placed on your forehead (over your third eye area).
  3. Use your thumb to close the right nostril and inhale slowly and consistently through your left nostril. Pause.
  4. Close your left nostril with your ring finger. Move your thumb to open your right nostril, and exhale slowly and consistently.
  5. Inhale through your right nostril, slowly and consistently. Pause.
  6. Close your right nostril, open your left, and exhale through your left nostril, slowly and consistently. Pause before moving onto the right nostril.
  7. Repeat this pattern for around 10 cycles. Then, release your right hand and rest it on your right knee. Return to normal breathing.

This exercise improves the connection between both sides of the brain. It reduces feelings of stress and anxiety, lowers heart rate and relieves tension, regulate the cooling and warming cycles of the body, and revitalises your mind.

Our left nostril activates the right side of our brain, and our right nostril activates the left hand side of our brain. To activate one side of your brain more often (if you are significantly dominant in either your left or right brain thinking), you can sleep on the appropriate side of your body to activate the corresponding side of your brain.

Here are two more types of alternate nostril breathing, as described by Dr Prakash C. Malshe in his book A Medical Understanding of Yoga.

Sahita Pranayama

  • Inhale through the left nostril, counting up to 16.
  • Hold the breath by closing both nostrils, counting up to 64.
  • In this time, make a sucking in effort that creates negative pressure inside the chest cavity (uddiyana bandha).
  • Then, release the breath through the right nostril, counting up to 32.
  • Repeat the process with the other nostril to complete the cycle.

This builds up the anaerobic capacity of holding your breath on inhale.

Suryabhedana Pranayama

  • Breathe in fully through the right nostril.
  • Then, hold your breath with a lot of effort while maintaining the chin lock (jalandhara bandha).
  • Hold your breath for as long as you possibly can.
  • When it is time to exhale, do so out of your left nostril, slowly, continuously, and with patience.
  • This should be repeated continuously.

This Pranayama is said to extend life and awakening the kundalini as well as increasing heat in the body. The conflict between the urge to breathe and voluntarily suppressing this urge raises our body temperature without the need for shivering.

It is possible to raise your body temperature enough to sweat using this method. It has been studied, and the results showed that participants started sweating after 4 cycles of this procedure (taking about 5 minutes to complete). Their body temperature rose by 2 °F in this time. Where this heat is generated from remains to be investigated because there is apparently no shivering or muscle contraction involved.

There are some advantages to this. Raising your body temperature intentionally can ward off the common cold. Inducing a higher body temperature also provides the correct temperature for immune cells to thrive.

There are also some adverse effects that can arise when we practice this type of breathing. In scientific research on suryabhedana pranayama some participants got cold sores. Herpes bacteria thrives in warmer temperatures. It was also noted that the palms of the hands of some participants grew red after practising this for a few days in a row, and the skin of their palms became dry.

Interestingly, there is no medical treatment available for excessive palm sweating, so in fact suryabhedana pranayama could be a reliable treatment method.

How to Lucid Dream – A Beginner’s Guide

Everyone has heard of the magic we can experience when we learn how to lucid dream. We know that lucid dreaming is a powerful experience and can help us improve our lives if we choose to. We spend about one third of our lives sleeping! Why not learn how to lucid dream and make the most of that time?

But what is lucid dreaming? Why are people searching for this term? Where can you find out how to lucid dream? And what do you do once you’re in a lucid dream? These are all the things that we are going to talk about in this article, including how to lucid dream even as a total beginner.

What is Lucid Dreaming?

First things first: what is lucid dreaming? Lucid dreaming has a broad definition but put simply a lucid dream is a very vivid dream in which you are aware that you are dreaming. When you are aware that you are in a dream state, it is possible to control and explore your dreams intentionally.

Lucid dreaming can be triggered into two ways.

Sometimes, a lucid dream begins once you are already asleep. Whilst you are dreaming, something triggers your conscious mind and you realise that you are dreaming without waking up. When this happens, you can take control of your dreams.

Other times, you can set an intention whilst you are still awake that you will lucid dream in the night. You can choose a certain problem you’d like a solution to, a scenario you would like to play out in different ways, or you could simply set the intention to have a lucid dream in which you explore your dream world.

You get to create the environment of your dream, set the mood, and do absolutely anything you want. People who have mastered the art of lucid dreaming have been famed for flying, walking through walls, and conjuring thoughts into reality.

Lucid dreaming is a highly valuable tool. Not only is it great fun to play with your imagination and a different state of consciousness, but you can use it to manifest your desires and land that job, ask the girl you like out on a date, or even perform better in sports.

The first account of lucid dreaming that we know of was made by Aristotle in “On Dreams”. Indeed, the dream state has been of great interest to us as a species since the dawn of time, and it is also considered a powerful shamanic tool for accessing higher realms of consciousness.

Experts agree that it is possible for every single person to lucid dream, but that it may be easier for some people more than others depending on many variables such as personality type.

Why Should I Learn How to Lucid Dream?

When you learn how to lucid dream, you will notice many benefits. Some of which may be listed right here:

  • Problem solving. It has been well documented that intentionally using lucid dreaming to solve problems in people’s waking lives is highly effective.
  • Overcome fears and nightmares. Lucid dreaming often begins when you are having a nightmare. Luckily, when you enter lucidity during a nightmare, you can overcome the terrifying situation and wake up feeling much better. Lucid dreaming can even reduce the number of nightmares someone has.
  • Boost your mood. When you learn to use lucid dreaming to overcome problems, explore your imagination, combat your nightmare demons, and improve your performance, of course your mood will be improved on a daily basis.
  • Have spiritual experiences. According to the shamanic viewpoint, our dream world and our waking world are not totally separate, but intricately intertwined. Travelling to “dreamtime” can be a deeply spiritual practice for inner work, shadow work, and healing.
  • Physical and mental healing. Just as hypnotic state training can encourage physical and emotional healing, so can lucid dreaming. Using the power of our subconscious mind to heal is something we can all learn very easily.
  • Improved motor skills. There is plenty of research that shows how thinking about performing an action can improve our abilities like strength. These darts players improved their darts skills by using lucid dreaming techniques.

Now here comes the most important part: How to lucid dream!

How To Lucid Dream: Preparation

Before you learn how to lucid dream, there is some preparatory work to be done!

Firstly, you can begin by keeping a dream journal. This is a critical step if you truly want to learn how to lucid dream. By keeping a dream journal you will improve your dream recall, your dreams will seem to become more vivid, and you will learn about yourself and the types of dreams you usually have. Keeping a dream journal also helps you to recognise when you are in a dream – the most important part of lucid dreaming!

Keep a book and a pen by your bed so that you can access it as soon as you wake up. Every time you wake up from sleep, write down everything you can possibly remember from your dreams.

Next, start meditating regularly. Waking mindfulness has been shown to improve people’s ability to enter a lucid dream state. This is likely down to someone’s ability to enter different brainwave levels.

How To Lucid Dream: Techniques

Brainwave Entrainment Audio

Some people listen to brainwave entrainment audios before they fall asleep so that they can enter a very deep and restful sleep. Brainwave entrainment audios can also induce hypnagogia – a sensory experience that happens right before you fall asleep and encourages lucid dreaming and creativity. Brainwave entrainment has many benefits on your brain functioning.

Supplements

Some supplements are highly effective when you want to learn how to lucid dream. Blue Lotus (the Egyptian Dream Flower), Calea Zacatechichi (aka The Dream Herb), and galantamine are three you might want to try.

MILD

MILD is an acronym for “Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams”. This technique was developed as a result of Dr. Stephen LaBerge’s extensive laboratory work. The technique is fully detailed in his book; Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming.

To use the MILD technique do this: 

When you are in bed and all set to surrender to sleep, continuously repeat in your head, “Next time I’m dreaming, I will notice that I am dreaming” or something along those lines. All the while, imagine yourself realising that you are in a lucid dream. This technique takes practice and it might not work out so well the very first time. Maintaining your dream journal and practising regularly will improve your results.

The MILD technique when learning how to lucid dream is also combined with the Wake-Back-To-Bed method (scroll down to see). In fact, using MILD after you’ve woken up from 5-6 hours of sleep is highly effective.

Research shows that the sooner you fall asleep after using this technique, the more vivid your dreams will be. The research also found that participants had a higher sleep quality than usual when using the MILD technique.

Wake-Back-To-Bed

The wake-back-to-bed method is arguably the most well known method to use when learning how to lucid dream. In theory, it is very simple. Take a look:

First, go to bed as normal and plan to wake up 5-6 hours later (use your alarm clock).

Next, when you are woken up make sure you wake up fully. Engage in some reading or find something that uses your brain to make you fully alert. Do this for 20-60 minutes. You must get out of bed!

Then, go back to bed and relax fully. Try meditating, brainwave entrainment audio, or MILD. Visualise yourself back in your dream state and plan your lucid dream for when you fall back to sleep.

And that’s it! Simple enough, right? With practice this technique is incredibly effective.

What To Do in a Lucid Dream

So, you now know how to prepare to learn how to lucid dream, and you know some techniques on how to lucid dream. But what do you do once you’ve made it? Sometimes people realise they are in a lucid dream and immediately wake up because they are surprised! If this happens to you, never fear! Use the wake-back-to-bed and MILD techniques to get straight back in.

Set Lucid Dream Goals

While you are learning how to lucid dream, it is good to set some lucid dream goals to help you get familiar with what lucid dreaming feels like. For example:

  • Eat a piece of fruit or a food you enjoy and see if you can sense the flavours.
  • Touch the bark of a tree and notice the textures under your hands.
  • Make your favourite song play and enjoy the sounds.
  • Look up at the starry sky – can you see the other galaxies?

The trick is to engage one or two senses and see how it feels for you. When you get the hang of it, you can increase the complexity of your practice. Can you fly over mountain ranges? Maybe you can walk through doors without opening them!

This is when you have mastered your dream state and can begin crafting the life of your dreams, improving your mood, and more!

Conclusions

Lucid dreaming is possible for every single person as long as you are dedicated to the practice it takes. When you commit fully and learn how to lucid dream, the possibilities really are endless!

Anxious? Here’s What You Can Do

Your heart is racing and you can’t stop it. The sweat is dripping down your brow. The worst is that feeling of doom, like it’s coming for you now and there’s nothing you can do. Panic. It all feels so inescapable. That’s what anxious and panic can feel like for people who suffer from those disorders on a daily basis.

Anxiety can feel like a debilitating illness, but it is important to know and remember what it is and what it is not. While it may seem like the walls are closing in, with practice and support, you can get through whatever your anxious feelings throw at you. Let’s look at anxiety first, and then some simple things that you can do to overcome anxious feelings in particular.

Anxiety

First, feeling anxious is mostly a physiological reaction. It is what has been hardwired into your nervous system and has helped keep humanity alive when we were fighting for survival against nature. The fight, flight, or freeze part of the nervous activates when you determine there is a threat. When that activates, your body suddenly gets pumped full of adrenalin, and you are in a heightened state of arousal. Your heart is beating fast, you’re sweating, and you feel panic. Does that sound familiar?

The psychological aspect of this is what we determine to be a threat. In modern times, there are few tigers or bears thinking we are lunch. Instead, we have upset customers or an angry boss. We have to deal with medical problems. Or we have to get out of our comfort zone and talk to a stranger at a party. These are just some of the things that growing up, we learn can be scary and dangerous. This activates the fight, flight, or freeze system, and we have anxiety and panic.

So, you may be wondering, if it is a part of who we are, what can we really do about it?

There is a lot that can be done, none of which requires medication or going to a doctor. While that can be helpful, there are other, more natural strategies to try first, that do not require addictive medications.

Where Do You Start?

One of the most important things to do is to acknowledge that you are dealing with anxious and panic. That is a major hurdle to overcome for many. Men, for the most part, struggle to admit to being scared, so they may call it other things. Learn to first identify what you are feeling, and acknowledge it. You do not have to accept, it; work to change what you are feeling, but you need to acknowledge that it is real and you are having a problem with it.

Now, feelings can be complicated, that much is obvious. We should, and need, to experience the wide variety of emotions there are. As much as painful emotions can be hurtful, they are necessary to heal and grow from the experience. As much as positive feelings need to be experienced fully and cherished, so too must the negative ones be observed. They are, after all, part of what makes us human.

What Can You Do?

Now, looking at what is helpful in order to control anxiety and panic more, the first step is to acknowledge what you are experiencing. This could be part of a daily meditation process. Spending some time every day just being. Find a quiet place, sit comfortably, and just breathe. Pay attention to your body, what it is doing. Let your thoughts drift. Notice them, but do not fight with them. Practicing daily meditation and learning about other mindfulness techniques will be the first step to short circuiting unnecessary anxiety.

You may choose to take time every day to practice gratitude as part of your mindfulness as well. Often we get lost in the day to day grind, and forget that we can be truly blessed with simple things. Take the time to seek them out and look at them for all their glory and beauty. It’s easy to be upset you are not a millionaire, but it’s a lot harder and infinitely more helpful to be grateful you have a house and food.

Part of this is teaching the process of just slowing down, so that you can interrupt anxiety when you start to feel it coming. That’s a key feature: you need to start doing something about it before it gets out of control. When you start feeling yourself breathing faster is the time to start relaxing and doing a meditative exercise.

SOMA Breath for Anxiety and Panic

Using SOMA meditation and breathwork, you can successfully interrupt anxiety and panic, feel less anxious, and more centered in your daily life. If you are feeling anxious, and that is ruining your day-to-day life, it is time to reach out for some tools to help yourself. You do not have to live anxious every day.

One of the key benefits you get from living a life less anxious is not seen as often. Anxious decisions are very rarely good, helpful or healthy. Anxious people will jump at any option that makes it go away, and those do not work out in the long run. Only when you are calm and focused, can you make healthy and helpful decisions in life for both you and your family.

Anxiety and panic can seem dangerous to the person experiencing them, but they are not, and do not need to feel that way. Acknowledge them and learn the tools to feel less anxious daily, and in life overall. SOMA meditation and breathwork is a way to accomplish this goal and take back your life from anxiety and panic. Although the male and female bodies are completely different, the brain has the same responses during an orgasm. One key difference however is that the female orgasm lasts longer, so it’s easier for scientists to keep track of brain imagery.

Aleister Crowley

Crowley is a very notorious icon in history due to his sexually controversial life and numerous written publications on Ceremonies, Magic, Poetry, and Occultism.

He believed that he had found a “secret power” and started the movement of “Sex Magick”. He led many “ceremonies” based around sex and sexual practices since he believed sex to be the “supreme magical power”. Crowley wrote a book called The Book of the Law which, he claimed, was whispered to him by his own “guardian angel”.

Some describe it as an initiation to a “new way of life”

In his own autobiography, Aleister talks about how he became a rebel against conventional religion and how his conflicting views with authority led to him being cast as a “black magician” and that his aim was always “the progress and spiritual freedom of humanity”.

One of his most notorious works of literature was The Book of Lies. After publication, Crowley was approached by one of the founders of O.T.O Society. This man, Tantric occultist and Freemason, Theodor Reuss, accused him of publishing their biggest secret.

As Crowley describes in his autobiography:

“It instantly flashed upon me. The entire symbolism, not only of freemasonry but of many other traditions, blazed upon my spiritual vision. From that moment the O.T.O. assumed its proper importance in my mind. I understood that I held in my hands the key to the future progress of humanity.”

Once Theodor Reuss realized that Crowley simply didn’t know the magnitude of his publication, he invited him to join O.T.O., and over time, Crowley  became the most influential member of such secret society which grew around the idea of “Love is the law, love under will”.

Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, a British organization dedicated to the study and practice of metaphysics, paranormal activities and the occult became one of the largest influences in Western occultism. The three founders of the Golden Dawn were also Freemasons.

Aleister Crowley was part of this group and he played a role in the conflict which ultimately led to the end of the organization.

A man named Francis X King, a British occult writer and editor who wrote about witchcraft, sex magic, tantra, and holistic medicine was a member of the Society of the Inner Light, which can be traced back to the Golden Dawn.

In his book “The Rites of Modern Occult Magic”, published in 1970, he makes reference to an old Masonic periodical created by Reuss, where information was revealed about what the O.T.O. activities really were:

“Our order possesses the key which opens up all Masonic and Hermetic secrets, namely, the teachings of sexual magic, and this teaching explains, without exception, all the secrets of Freemasonry and all systems of religion“.

Did Jesus Christ Practice Sex Magic? 

Many historians and researchers have pointed out that Jesus may have had a sexual relationship with one of his followers, Mary Magdalene. This is strongly denied by churches and hardcore Christian believers, but the idea that Jesus was a man who acknowledged his sexual nature and had a lover might make more sense.

The original tales of these histories leave a lot of room for misinterpretation. Many have said that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute asking for forgiveness. Others have said that Mary actually came from a wealthy family and enjoyed a sexually liberated lifestyle.

One element on which everyone agrees is that Mary Magdalene was very close to Jesus – even sparking jealousy from other pupils – and that she was present at the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Christ. 

In the highly acclaimed book The Templar Revealed, the writers make a very strong case in their enormous research to prove a few points that could have been distorted, or put aside, by the Roman Catholic Church influencing the choice of texts within the New Testament.

One of such claims is that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a sexual relationship. Here’s an actual quotation from the book:
 
“Mary Magdalene had a ritualized, “sacred” sexual relationship with Jesus, in keeping with their religious beliefs, and as his initiator into the sacred mysteries had an equal relationship to Jesus.”

Is it possible that Mary Magdalene understood the power of the female orgasm and initiated Jesus into such practices, further helping him increase, or maybe even find, his miraculous powers?

Conclusion

Although these are all hypotheses and evidence of Jesus’ existence is yet to actually be proven, it would actually make a lot of sense that sexual energy was at the source of secret powers and sacred rituals over history.

  3. Start your work sets – This can be thought of as the meat of the session. You’re either spending time in that mindful breathing state, or completely involved in your mantra meditation. Whatever it is, this is usually the experience of ‘time dilation’ or a complete loss of exactly how long you’ve been meditating. Don’t think this will happen on your first attempt. Don’t think it will happen on every meditation attempt, especially without guidance or instruction. Simply allow it to be whatever it is.
  4. Cool down and stretch – Most meditation practices have a moment of simply ‘being’. Reacclimatization to your reality can be an imperative moment. Allow yourself to an account of your own life.

Your unconscious mind cannot distinguish between positive and negative, so if you want to reach your perfect weight, you would say ‘I am at my perfect weight and body shape’ rather than ‘I don’t want to be fat’ otherwise your unconscious mind will act on the word fat, ignoring the don’t and manifest that result instead.

2. They must be in the present tense – as you manifest only what you truly believe has already occurred, all intensions should be in the present tense. For example if you want want attract more money, you would say ‘I am wealthy’ or you can be even more specific and say ‘I have $100k in my bank account”

Other points to consider are:

4. They must be in the first person
5. They must involved a specific action
6. Repetition is essential, so the more times you repeat an affirmation the better. It should become a daily practice.
7. Positive intentions do not magically manifest results, what they do instead is open your subconscious mind to new channels of information and opportunity, so you must take action on these in order for any major changes to happen to your life.

Here are some examples of good and bad positive intentions to use.

I am a creative thinker – good

I want to be a creative thinker – bad

I am in perfect health – good

I don’t want to be fat – bad

Can You Consciously Control Your Immune System?

The results of a study conducted with the use of Wim Hof method suggest that you can learn to consciously control your immune system responses.

Wim Hof is a Dutch world record holder and superhuman Yogi who is famous worldwide for his ability to resist cold. For this he is widely known as “the Iceman”.

Reseaerch led by Matthijs Kox of the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, studied his method, which is somewhat similar to the Tibetan Tummo technique (yoga of inner heat) and involves third-eye meditation, breathing exercises, and cold exposure, and used it to train 12 volunteers to fend off inflammation.

In the framework of the study, 24 volunteers, including 12 people trained in the Wim Hof method and 12 who did not undergo any training, were subjected to the inflammation test, during which they were injected with a strain of bacteria that provokes flu-like symptoms.

As a result, volunteers who underwent training with Hof method reported fewer and less intense flu-like symptoms than those who did not. At the same time, trained volunteers produced smaller amounts of proteins related to inflammation, and higher levels of interleukin-10, an inflammation-fighting protein.

Hitherto, both the autonomic nervous system and innate immune system were regarded as systems that cannot be voluntarily influenced. The present study demonstrates that, through practicing techniques learned in a short-term training program, the sympathetic nervous system and immune system can indeed be voluntarily influenced,” writes the scientific journal PNAS, where the study was published.

“Orthodox neurobiologists and orthodox immunologists have been skeptical. They think the study of the interactions between the nervous and immune systems is a ‘field in the shadows’. This study is a nice way to show that link,” said Guiseppe Matarese, an immunologist of the University of Salerno in Italy who was not involved in the study.

What’s more, it is not the only scientific study to show that you can use your mind to consciously control your immune system. In particular, Australian scientists came to the conclusion that consciousness is able to influence the intensity of the allergic reaction.

As a part of an experiment, several healthy volunteers had their arms injected with histamine, a substance that plays a major role in many allergic reactions. The experiment was structured so that they thought that the drug was injected in a rubber doll, while a real injection was made in their other arm.

After the experiment, the intensity of the allergic response on both arms of the volunteers was evaluated and compared to the one of the control group who had no rubber doll illusion. As a result, the researchers found that the volunteers who thought that the injection had been given to the doll manifested a much stronger effect of histamine on the arm that had been replaced by the fake one.

Such a finding is particularly relevant to the immune system because a primary role of the immune system is to discriminate self from non-self,” said Prof Lorimer Moseley, who led the study. “These findings strengthen the argument that the brain exerts some kind of control over specific body parts according to how strongly we own them”.

Both studies show that the immune system can be influenced by the consciousness in many ways, which could mean that our thoughts, beliefs and mood can affect the physical state of our body. Knowing that, you can learn to control your thinking and thus your immune system and health.
